Gas Permeable Contact Lenses
Gas permeable contact lenses are greatly overlooked in the eye care industry. They are often replaced with soft contacts and disposables, but they have advantages that no other style can boast. To begin, they have the best of both worlds in terms of the structure of their polymers. They are less rigid than the traditional hard lenses which makes them far more comfortable. However, because they are harder than the soft, disposable types, they correct the vision better.
Gas permeable contact lenses are made from a material that allows them to hold the shape of the lens and allows air to pass through freely. This more solid lens shape results in vision that is crisper and clearer. Also, because they are, as the name suggest, gas permeable, eyes do not get dried out or irritated as easily. This is not only a factor for comfort, but also for the health of the eye. Because air can flow in and out, bacteria and allergens can also flow in and out. With other types of contacts, foreign objects or substances may get trapped between the lens and the eye, and cause more damage than necessary.
What makes gas permeable contact lenses unique is that they do not contain water. Soft contact lenses contain a great amount of water in order to provide comfort, but this comfort comes at a price. The water in contacts is what causes protein deposits from accumulating on the lens. It is also a breeding ground for all types of bacteria. Because gas permeable contact lenses contain little to no water, they are far more hygienic to use regularly.
Also, when cared for properly, gas permeable lenses can save the user money. Disposable contact lenses are flimsy and easy to damage. They also need to be replaced on a bi-weekly or monthly basis. Financially, this can add up quickly. If the user cares for their gas permeable contact lenses, they can last months or years without needing replacements.
